Can you tell us about Living Wisdom High School?
Living Wisdom HS is a micro high school rooted in the proven principle that young people who are happy and confident approach learning with enthusiasm. Students who feel respected, included, and safe can enjoy the challenges of a rigorous academic curriculum, delivered in an expansive spirit of adventure. Thus, the stress and pressure of high school is transmuted into a joyful journey of self-expansion and deep learning.
This fall, we saw our second graduating class of seniors step into university! They are now students at schools such as UC San Diego, Chapman University, Santa Clara University, San Jose State, and Cal Poly. Over the years, graduates from our middle & high school programs demonstrate impressive poise, compassion, and inner strength. They know how to laugh, they trust themselves, they practice kindness, and are lifelong learners. Possessing deep self-knowledge and authenticity, they engage in study across a wide range of fields from genetics to theater, business to graphic design, music to entrepreneurship.
Most striking among the qualities possessed by our graduates is their expression of wisdom which is cultivated through a focus on creativity, intuition, and joy in the learning process.
What is your history at Cubberley?
In 2017 Living Wisdom School, established in Palo Alto in 1992, expanded to include a high school program whose mission it is to offer an education where learning and joy come together. As fate would have it, Foothill College was relocating out of Cubberley Community Center at that same time, and we were granted space on campus. Cubberley has been a haven for our teens ever since! Our network of students, parents, educators, and community mentors and volunteers expands to engage hundreds of Palo Alto residents and members of our surrounding communities as well.
What are your hopes for the Cubberley redevelopment?
As Cubberley Community Center is reimagined and developed, we hope that it continues to be a gathering place for community service and connection. There is a wide array of organizations which serve through the Cubberley network, and we hope that this space remains dedicated to housing and hosting the arts, sciences, athletics, and service organizations that add beauty and meaning to our lives!
What is your favorite memory at Cubberley?
Among the many memories we hold with gratitude, our school’s Joy-a-Thon fundraiser on the Cubberley track stands out as one of the most joyful and community-building moments we had before the COVID closures began.
We are delighted to again be able to utilize all of the Cubberley Campus alongside our Palo Alto neighbors and friends!
