Here is a little window into some of the magic our students are experiencing at school.
The quality of joy that permeates our days is remarkable and just keeps expanding! We have much to be grateful for in this regard. In contrast to the tension and strife being experienced by so many around the world and the conflicts punctuating the news, the expression of cooperation, kindness, and communication which characterizes the Living Wisdom community is medicine for the soul. Yesterday, during our noontime meeting, we practiced a meditation on peace and harmony for Russia and Ukraine, and also for the cultivation of those qualities within ourselves.
This afternoon, as we often do on Fridays, our high school students joins the elementary and middle school classes for an afternoon of PE at the park. I watched teenagers effortlessly integrate 4th graders into their game of volleyball and then adapt to support the younger players with encouragement and celebration. Another mixed age group took to the tennis courts for a cooperative round of pickle ball. Watching a group of 4th-7th graders, I saw them repeatedly navigate the usual game-related conflicts that arose with graceful ease, each listening to the other, making compromises, and respecting the diverse needs of all the players involved. Occasionally a teacher’s input guided the flow, but largely, it was the students themselves manifesting a cooperative community of learners. Such is the power of environment and immersion in a learning environment like Living Wisdom.
Earlier today, during Life Skills, we welcomed a guest musician for a workshop on rhythm and musical improvisation. Breaking out of the confines of training, convention, and skill, we drummed, tapped, and jammed together throughout the morning. A quality of freedom permeated the workshop and left us grateful for the gift of music and the opportunity to create in partnership with friends and teachers.
In connection with our study of Julius Caesar in Literature class, a guest teacher joined Haze in integrating the power of performing arts into the class. Students rose to the occasion, memorizing and performing scenes from this iconic Shakespearean drama, and learning powerful life lessons about empathy, authenticity, and communication along the way. We will continue integrating theater into the year, and look forward to opportunities to share more of what is created with all of you soon!
Physics students are beginning a long-term project of envisioning and developing a science fair project. General and Honors Physics students will weave this into their work at school and at home. More information will come to you soon about how you can support their scientific inquiry and procedure. AP Physics students busy studying for the May exams. Our current exploration is in the realm of sound and light waves! Prior to that, we did a deep dive into electricity and circuits.
There is so much more that could be shared. We hope these photos and small update draw you more fully into our student’s experience and learning at Living Wisdom. As we enter into the emerging spring, we look forward to our annual Joy-Ride, more service opportunities, and our spring trip in May.
